Penguins beat Sabres in shootout

BUFFALO: The Pittsburgh Penguins moved level on top the NHL standings with a 2-1 win after a shootout against the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday. Pittsburgh goalie Marc-Andre Fleury made 31 saves and stopped three more tries in the shootout, and Kris Letang scored the only goal in the tiebreaker.

Chris Kunitz scored in regulation for Pittsburgh, who have won five straight and moved level on points with divisional rival New Jersey.

Buffalo’s goal came from Jason Pominville.

Predators 5, Flames 3: In Calgary, Alberta, Nashville pulled level on points with Central Division leader Chicago, downing Calgary.

Defenseman Cody Franson scored the go-ahead goal in the third period. Martin Erat and Marcel Goc each had a goal and two assists, while David Legwand and Dave Scatchard added goals for Nashville.

Jarome Iginla scored twice, and Dion Phaneuf added a goal for Calgary, which missed a chance to go top of the Northwest Division.

Devils 5, Thrashers 4: In Atlanta, New Jersey edged Atlanta for a fourth straight win that kept them atop the NHL standings. The Devils pulled veteran goalie Martin Brodeur after he allowed three first-period goals, then came back with three second-period goals. Capitals 4, Oilers 2: In Edmonton, Alberta, Alex Ovechkin scored his 22nd and 23rd goals of the season early in the third period to lift Washington over Edmonton.

Ovechkin drew the Capitals within a goal in the first minute of the third, and then tied it with a sharp-angle shot. Tomas Fleischmann gave Washington the lead and Ovechkin helped set up Nicklas Backstrom’s sealer.

Stars 4, Red Wings 3: In Dallas, the hosts ended Detroit’s winning run at four games.

Defenseman Karlis Skrastins had his first career two-goal game and added an assist, while James Neal also scored twice for Dallas. The Stars have points from their past seven home games and have beaten the Red Wings in the last four meetings in Dallas.

Avalanche 5, Blue Jackets 2: In Denver, Chris Stewart scored 21 seconds into the game, opening a four-goal first-period flurry that carried Colorado past Columbus.

Wojtek Wolski scored twice for Colorado, boosting his team-leading total to 15. John-Michael Liles and Milan Hejduk also had goals.

R.J. Umberger and Jason Chimera scored for Columbus.

Ducks 4, Coyotes 2: In Anaheim, California, Kyle Chipchura scored his first goal since joining Anaheim this month, helping defeat Phoenix. Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller made 17 of his 39 saves in the first period. Ryan Getzlaf and Mike Brown also scored for the Ducks.

Senators 4, Wild 1: In Ottawa, Mike Brodeur conceded just one goal in his NHL debut as Ottawa overcame Minnesota.

Brodeur, who isn’t related to New Jersey goalie Martin Brodeur, stopped 22 shots in his first career start. Erik Karlsson got his first career goal for Ottawa, while Martin Havlat scored for Minnesota.

Maple Leafs 2, Bruins 0: In Toronto, Swedish rookie Jonas Gustavsson made 25 saves for his first NHL shutout, helping Toronto beat Boston in his first start since heart surgery. Tomas Kaberle and Jason Blake each scored for the Maple Leafs.

Canadiens 3, Islanders 0: In Uniondale, New York, Jaroslav Halak made 40 saves for his first shutout of the season as Montreal trumped New York.

Rangers 2, Flyers 1: In Philadelphia, Artem Anisimov scored the winner in the second period as New York edged Philadelphia. Goalie Henrik Lundqvist made 36 saves for New York in front of the few fans who braved a winter storm.

Hurricanes 3, Panthers 2: In Raleigh, North Carolina, Cam Ward made 28 saves as Carolina piped Florida. Matt Cullen had a goal and an assist, and Patrick Dwyer and Sergei Samsonov also scored for Carolina.
