ISLAMABAD: Former chief of the Jamaat-e-Islami Monday demanded speedy implementation of the Supreme Court’s verdict on National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO).

“If the judgment is not implemented in its true letter and spirit and state institutions namely the judiciary and the executive resort to confrontation that will simply invite another martial law rule in the country,” Qazi Hussain Ahmad said in a statement issued here.

The statement said: “The government must avoid confrontation with the judiciary. Otherwise it will be disastrous for the political system and will derail the process of democracy and the military will take advantage of the situation.” Ahmad asked President Asif Ali Zardari to face the court cases. “Zardari is holding two positions; he is the president and acting chairperson of his Pakistan Peoples Party. It is unconstitutional,” he said.

Meanwhile, an accountability court in Rawalpindi Monday ordered Interior Minister Rehman Malik to appear before the court in person. Malik’s lawyer Amjad Iqbal Malik appeared before the court to secure bail before arrest.

Judge Tariq Abbasi of the accountability court ordered Malik to appear in person before the court on Jan. 2. Malik’s lawyer Amjad Iqbal Malik assured the court that the minister would appear before the court to defend himself.
