JEDDAH: Ninety of the 100 damaged streetlamps in Quwaizah have been repaired and functioning once again, said Anwar Nuri, head of the Lighting Division at Jeddah municipality.

“Many streetlamps were damaged in Quwaizah during the Nov. 25 flash floods. As a result, we’ve carried out a lot of work in that area and the other flood-afflicted areas of Jeddah,” said Nuri. He said Jeddah municipality has almost repaired the district’s entire lighting network.

The municipality received around 12,716 calls to fix lighting across the city last year. Around 12,588 of these requests (averaging 1,060 requests a month) were met.

Nuri said the municipality responds to 35 calls a day and sends specialists to fix power generators. He added workers do carry out random checks to ensure streetlamps are working and repair those that are damaged.

“Sometime cables and other parts are stolen. Construction workers sometimes mistakenly sever electric cables while drilling. This causes many problems,” he said.

“We presently receive about 35 calls a day compared to less than 25 calls a day last year,” he said, adding that residents can call the Lighting Division on 940.
