‘Witch’ in prison dies of choking

GURAYAT: A 55-year-old woman on death row in the local jail died of choking while eating her supper on Tuesday, a local newspaper reported on Thursday. The inmate had been convicted of performing witchcraft and entered death row five years ago. The paper did not identify the woman or provide background on her case.

Warning against baby formula

JEDDAH: The Saudi Food and Drugs Authority has warned against Hero baby formula (a substitute for mother’s milk) due to contamination with enterobacter sakazakii bacteria, which can cause serious health hazards to children, Al-Eqtisadiah reported on Thursday. The newspaper said the warning was a precautionary measure taken in the light of a decision issued by the Ministry of Environment and Water in the United Arab Emirates on Jan. 17 to withdraw the product from the market.

Eastern Province rail service resumes

DAMMAM: Riyadh-Dammam train service in Eastern Province resumed on Thursday morning after a train accident blocked rail traffic on Monday, an official source of the Saudi Railway Organization (SRO) said in a statement to Saudi Press Agency. SRO’s maintenance workers removed the derailed engine and three coaches, and repair teams fixed the rails. According to media reports, an injured assistant driver of the train underwent two operations and was still in hospital. The conductor was treated and released.
