TAIF: A man was killed and 22 passengers were injured in a pileup involving a bus carrying 50 pilgrims, seven cars and a small truck, on Al-Sayel highway outside Taif city on Thursday. There were 15 other vehicles involved in the accident.
Ten people were treated at the scene but did not have to go to hospital.
The injured were taken to different hospitals in Taif and nearby Al-Sayel, spokesman of Health Affairs Department in Taif Saeed Al-Zahrani told Arab News.
He said three of the injured were in critical condition.
Al-Zahrani said medical teams at all hospitals in the region were put in emergency mode because of the high number of injured in one incident.
Nineteen Civil Defense and Red Crescent teams responded. Some passengers were trapped in their vehicles and had to be extracted.
The Health Affairs Department sent 11 medical teams drawn from government and private hospitals and medical centers to the accident site.
Responders had to travel in opposite lanes on the highway due to the five-kilometer traffic jam caused by the pileup.
