White: an experience

White is nestled in a corner of Sari Gate. It’s a little hard to see what lies inside due to the floor-to-ceiling windows plastered with white window decals, so we really didn’t know what to expect until we passed through a grand door into a swish reception area where we were guided to our ritzy-looking table.
The interior more than lives up to its name; almost everything is white save for the ceiling (which is black). You have white cushions, white-leather-backed seating, napkins, tablecloths, dishes, and pretty much everything else. For example, the chairs are a clear acrylic plastic (with white cushions); you get the picture.
I couldn’t help but notice how comfy the seats were. I almost sank into the cushioning on the acrylic chair. While we were taking in our surroundings, our waiter arrived with menus. Short for time, we decided to skip both appetizers and desserts and just chose mains. The menu is quite varied. There’s an interesting selection of dishes, but some were unfortunately misspelled in English (“backed potatoe” anyone?), which didn’t fill us with the highest expectation.
We tried the veal piccata main course (SR69) served with a side portion of vegetables, and the healthy option chicken main. The waiter made sure to ask me how I would like the veal. I decided on medium rare. To drink I tried the guava juice while my friend ordering just a bottled water. The guava juice arrived first and was a colorful pink, freshly juiced — no complaints there.
A basket of bread then arrived with a small dish of olives and parmesan in balsamic vinegar, a nice touch we thought. However we were charged SR6 for this, which was not told to us when the bread we didn’t order was brought to the table.
Soon after our mains arrived. The presentation was excellent. I must admit that I was quite impressed with my veal. It was not overcooked. It was tender. The piccata sauce went very well with the meat. The vegetables were also crisp, not the soggy vitamin-less offerings one usually encounters. Some might even find the veggies a little too firm.
My friend found his marinated chicken (SR56) dry, questioning for how long it had been marinating. Still, he did manage to finish off his plate. Our request for balsamic vinegar to go with the salad was met quickly, and the staff was courteous and helpful throughout the meal.
The dessert menu caught our eye, but checking our watches we realized we had little time left. So after quickly settling the bill (SR178 For two including a 15 percent service fee) we made our exit. Based on the success of my veal piccata alone, I am tempted to drop in again to try out the other mains and get a feel for the desserts! I have a feeling I’ll be seeing a lot of White in the near future!
