Gavaskar said the IPL provided India players an opportunity to practice more than players from other countries, Press Trust of India reported on Friday.
"It's just the fact that Twenty20 is a format where you have got to be good on the day and if you are not good on your day, you lose," he said.
India, winner of the inaugural World Twenty20 in 2007, lost all three of its Super Eight matches and failed to reach the semifinals in the West Indies.
Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni reportedly said after-match parties in the IPL and intercity traveling took its toll on the players in the Caribbean.
The IPL ended five days before the World Twenty20.
"Tell me one thing, there were no parties in the West Indies were there? So how can you say that the team performed badly in the Caribbean because of parties in India," Gavaskar said.
Pakistan, England, Sri Lanka and Australia qualified for the semifinals, with players from the latter three countries competing in the IPL.
That undermined any player burnout argument, Gavaskar said.
"If that was the case then Sri Lanka would not have been in the semifinal, the England team would not have been in the final.
"The Australian team also. A lot of Australian players were in the IPL so I don't think that is an issue at all." The India batsmen's shortcoming, according to Gavaskar, was being exposed on bouncy pitches in Barbados, and he said they needed to spend more time at the National Cricket Academy.
"They need to go back to the NCA and hone their skills against the short ball," Gavaskar said.
Sachin Tendulkar, who has quit playing Twenty20 internationals, also said the IPL provided an opportunity for out-of-form players to return to form.
Tendulkar led Mumbai Indians to the final before losing to Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings.
"We Mumbai Indians played so well but in the final things didn't work out for us. So it can happen to anyone," Tendulkar said. "All I can say is that the players need support so that they can start fresh again and look to deliver better results."
