Lt. Gen. Dahi Khalfan Tamim says the existing network of 25,000 security cameras has helped police “pull the strings together” and “identify suspects” in the assassination of Mahmoud Al-Mabhouh in a posh Dubai hotel.
"We need to work according to a well-studied strategic plan and not only react to events as they come along... We will have cameras everywhere," said Khalfan of the project.
His remarks were published Sunday in The National newspaper.
"With Al-Mabhuh’s murder, we were able to play back time through the footage captured by cameras," said Khalfan, adding they analyzed 1,700 hours of images and "were able to identify the suspects."
Dubai police released a 10-minute compilation of video surveillance showing several of 32 identified suspects arriving at Dubai airport, entering a hotel lobby and even riding an elevator with the victim.
Tamim said Dubai would spend $136 million for more cameras that will cover “dead spots” in the city.
