But it does pay to have a backup plan just in case you are rumbled by your boss, as three workers at a store in Jeddah found out to their cost.
The storeowner, who rarely visits his store and relies on the three employees to run it, decided to pay them a surprise visit on the evening of the semifinal match between Germany and Spain.
He was surprised to see that his store was closed, while there was no sign of the workers.
He waited for half an hour in front of the store, waiting for one of the employees to show up, but there was no sign of anyone.
The owner started getting angry as customers were turning up to buy something from the store, before walking away when they found out it was closed. He went to where they live near the store but there was still no sign. He called their cell phones but they were switched off.
He started fearing that something had happened to his employees, but when he asked the neighbors where they were, they told him to check the coffee shop nearby.
He went there and was shocked to find out that all three were inside the coffee shop, two of then wearing German shirts and the other a Spain shirt, debating how Germany lost the match 1-0.
They got the shock of their life when they saw the owner, who decided to fire them on the spot.
A number of onlookers decided to intervene and begged the storeowner for forgiveness on the workers’ behalf, saying that World Cup fever was normal. The owner partly relented and decided to fire one employee, while deducting part of the other two’s salary.
