The man’s brother was saved by the border guards who threw him a life vest just before a large wave hit them. Their father, who was standing on the shore, had been calling on them to get out after seeing large waves heading their way.
Lt. Col. Abdullah bin Hamad Al-Ghirair, spokesman for the Border Guard in Tabuk, said the incident took place in Al-Kasrah area on Umluj beach, which is a deep and dangerous spot where swimming is not permitted.
Al-Ghirair said the strong water currents prevented rescuers from reaching the two young men. “One of the border guards threw a life vest, which was grabbed by one of them. The other was taken away by the waves,” he said.
The Border Guard has repeatedly warned holidaymakers from going into the sea when the weather is unstable and waves are high. It has also called on people to follow safety rules and take good care of their children.
