The four suspects, including one woman, are being charged with stealing $1.4 million worth of diamonds from a jewelry show in Mumbai.
The 887.24 carats of diamonds are believed to have been stolen from the booth of the Israeli-based diamond company Dalumi Group. The four were reportedly observed stealing the precious stones on CCTV.
According to information received by the Mumbai Police. Dubai police arrested the four as they were connecting to a flight to Hamburg. Senior officer Himanshu Roy from the Mumbai Police said India would seek the extradition of the four.
“Initially the salesman thought the goods had been misplaced. He searched for them but by the night he realized that they had been stolen,” the officer is reported to have said.
According to police, the woman is believed to have slipped the stones into her bag while the men diverted a salesman’s attention. Authorities believe the suspects may be professional thieves.
The International Jewelry Show, which had 1,550 booths exhibiting products from across the world, ended on Monday.
The show has high security. Attendees were required to provide copies of their passports to enter.
