“The girl fell on two
Bangladeshi laborers working on the top of the adjoining hotel, but she died
instantly,” spokesman of Makkah police Maj. Maj. Abdul Mohsen Al-Maiman said in
a statement.
The girl had come for Umrah with
her stepfather from France, Al-Maiman added.
The body of the girl was
examined and evidence gathered. The case will be transferred to the General
Prosecution and Investigation Board.
According to preliminary
medical reports the girl was raped before her fall and death.
The girl was missing since
nine in the night and her body was found past midnight on the top of the other
hotel, a security source said.
The reaction from some led to
a near-lynching for those suspected of involvement in the incident.
Algerian pilgrims in Makkah gathered
in the nearby road demanding immediate punishment to the culprits. Makkah
police managed to disperse the Algerian crowd peacefully Wednesday morning
after convincing them that severe punishment will be meted out to the culprits
in line with Shariah after the mandated investigations are completed.
The Algerian consul general
arrived in Makkah after receiving the news of the accident to follow up on the
case. He said that the family of the girl traveled to France and the Algerian
consulate is following up with the case. He said that the peaceful gathering in
Makkah was not a demonstration but was in solidarity with the family of the
girl that died.
