Environmental Minister Buyelwa Sonjica on Friday visited the southwestern region where the plant grows. The plant, sceletium tortuosum, is known to reduce stress, relieve hunger, sedate and elevate moods. She says South African communities who have long used the plant will receive a share of the profits.
Local company HGH Pharmaceuticals has an agreement with Morristown, New Jersey-based P.L. Thomas & Co., which says products containing the plant could be available as soon as 2011.
