Other areas affected include Ghulail, Al-Masfat, Al-Mahjar and Al-Hindawiyah, but power was restored a few hours later.
Acting spokesman for the Civil Defense in Makkah province, Capt. Abdul Rahman Al-Ghamdi, told Arab News that a member of the firefighting squad blacked out because of the thick smoke, but he regained consciousness after treatment.
He said the fire broke out at the underground cables and spread to four transmitters before four firefighting units put it out.
According to the spokesman, rescue and ambulance teams were also dispatched to the scene and the fire was controlled within two hours.
Chairman of the National Electricity Company’s western sector, Abdul Moeen Al-Sheikh, said the cables blew, causing huge smoke that covered the station and neighboring districts.
He said the reason for the fire was not yet known, but power was restored to about 90 percent of subscribers.
