Vanek scores twice as Sabres crush Devils 6-1

Ryan Miller had 26 saves, while Drew Stafford, Tyler Myers, Tyler Ennis and Patrick Kaleta also scored in Buffalo’s best offensive game of the season. The Zach Parise scored for the struggling Devils, who benched high-priced left wing Ilya Kovalchuk on the same night they tried to give Martin Brodeur his first night off this season. Brodeur came on 8:17 into the second period after Hedberg allowed four goals on 13 shots.
New Jersey is winless at home (0-4-1) under new coach John MacLean and 2-5-1 overall.
At Boston, Artem Anisimov and Alex Frolov scored off bouncing pucks 25 seconds apart in the first period and Henrik Lundqvist stopped 35 shots as the New York Rangers held off Boston.
Marc Staal also scored for the Rangers, who posted their second straight road win.
Zdeno Chara and Nathan Horton had goals for the Bruins, whose four-game winning streak was snapped.
At Detroit, Pavel Datsyuk scored with 12 seconds left in the game to give Detroit a win over Anaheim.
The Red Wings rallied from a 3-1 second-period deficit and trailed 4-3 in the third after Teemu Selanne scored with 11:28 remaining. Selanne’s goal was the 610th of his career, tying Bobby Hull for 15th on the NHL’s career list.
Henrik Zetterberg scored twice for Detroit, including the tying goal with 8:43 left.
At Ottawa, Carey Price made 19 saves for his first shutout in nearly two years and Andrei Kostitsyn scored twice as Montreal downed Ottawa.
Price, who has started each of Montreal’s seven games, has five career shutouts. It was his first in 90 games since Nov. 11, 2008.
Kostitsyn opened the scoring in the first and added his second goal of the game late in the second to put Montreal up by three. Benoit Pouliot also scored in the second for the Canadiens.
At Washington, Alexander Semin scored three goals and Tomas Fleischmann got the game-winner 1:37 into overtime, giving Washington a win over Atlanta.
It was the fourth career hat trick for Semin, who came in with two goals in Washington’s first seven games.
Evander Kane scored two goals, Andrew Ladd had one, and Chris Mason finished with 40 saves. But it wasn’t enough to prevent the Thrashers from absorbing their third straight defeat.
At Philadelphia, Mike Richards scored his first goal of the season and had two assists to help Philadelphia snap a three-game losing streak.
Ville Leino, Blair Betts, Scott Hartnell and Danny Briere also scored for Philadelphia, which outshot Toronto 40-15.
Toronto’s Phil Kessel and Clarke MacArthur each scored their sixth goals of the season. Of the Leafs’ 20 goals, 12 have been scored by that tandem. MacArthur’s goal brought the Leafs within one with 1:14 left in the second period.
At Sunrise, Florida, Radek Dvorak’s goal with 6:32 left in the third period lifted Florida over the Islanders, despite a hat trick by New York’s John Tavares.
It was the first three-goal game in the NHL for Tavares, the No. 1 pick in the 2009 draft.
Mike Weaver, Steve Bernier, and David Booth also scored goals for the Panthers. Tomas Vokoun made 30 saves.
Rick DiPietro stopped 26 shots for the Islanders, who had a three-game winning streak snapped.
At Dallas, Pekka Rinne made 30 saves for his 15th NHL shutout, Cal O’Reilly scored in the game’s first minute, and Nashville held on to beat Dallas.
Nashville came out aggressively and built early momentum when O’Reilly tucked a rebound past Stars goalie Kari Lehtonen 42 seconds after the opening faceoff. Shea Weber and Steve Sullivan assisted.
Rinne did the rest for the Predators, especially in the second period when Dallas held a 13-5 shots advantage.
At St. Louis, Erik Johnson scored 50 seconds into overtime and Jaroslav Halak made 31 saves as St. Louis beat Pittsburgh for its 10th straight home victory.
Johnson’s first goal of the season came after T.J. Oshie stripped Penguins defenseman Paul Martin of the puck in the corner. Martin fed Johnson in the slot for a goal past goalie Brent Johnson.
At Chicago, Antoine Vermette scored on a deflection at 6:29 of the third period to snap a tie as Columbus rebounded from an early two-goal deficit to beat Chicago.
Vermette assisted on R.J. Umberger’s power-play goal earlier in the third that tied it at 2. Derick Brassard scored late in the second period for the Blue Jackets, who dominated the third and outshot Chicago 20-8 in the period.
Patrick Sharp and Jonathan Toews each had a goal and assist for Chicago.
At Phoenix, Anton Babchuk scored 2:52 into overtime as Carolina beat Phoenix after squandering a three-goal lead.
Phoenix trailed 3-0 at the start of the third period, but Kyle Turris led the Coyotes’ comeback with a pair of goals and an assist.
Patrick Dwyer, Jussi Jokinen and Sergei Samsonov scored for the Hurricanes.
At Denver, Brad Richardson had three goals, including a tiebreaking short-handed tally late in the third period, and Los Angeles beat Colorado in a matchup of the NHL’s two youngest teams.
Alexei Ponikarovsky, Anze Kopitar and Dustin Brown also scored for the Kings. Paul Stastny and Milan Hejduk each scored twice for the Avalanche.
At Edmonton, Alberta, Joe Pavelski had a goal and two assists in San Jose’s victory over Edmonton.
Dany Heatley, Logan Couture, Ryane Clowe, John McCarthy and Dan Boyle also scored and Joe Thornton had three assists for the Sharks.
Jordan Eberle had the lone goal for the Oilers, who have lost four straight after two wins to open the season.
