They found a scene of chaos after responding to the blast which occurred shortly after 7 a.m. at a street in Irlam in Salford.
Four houses were destroyed and neighbors had crawled over rubble to help rescue people whose homes had been damaged, the fire brigade said.
A specialist search team and some 40 firefighters were sent to deal with the incident along with two fire service dogs, amid fears that people were trapped in the debris.
One woman suffered serious burns and 10 other people were taken to hospital with minor injuries including five children.
Motorists were told to avoid the area after surrounding roads were closed, and Salford city council set up a rest center for residents who had been forced to leave their homes.
