A written complaint in this respect was lodged by Gurudas Vajpayee, the secretary of the UDD with the Marine Drive police station which registered the offense against unknown persons under sections 204 and 380 of the Indian Penal Code.
Vajpayee in his complaint stated that the important documents and files relating to the Adarsh society were dated between the period beginning Oct. 30, 2009 and Nov. 1, 2010. This has given a new turn to the scam as the documents and files that were reported missing were during the time when Chavan was the chief minister.
A UDD official told Arab News that 10 out of the 16 files relating to Adarsh society were with the department. Not only the 10 files were missing but also several important documents from the remaining 6 files were also missing.
The police have informed the Central Bureau of Investigations (CBI) that is probing the scam about the missing files and documents.
Several politicians, bureaucrats and defense personnel including the former chief of the Indian Army and Navy were caught into the 32-story Adarsh housing society scam.
The land was given out at concessional rate by the Maharashtra government in the posh Colaba locality to the society to construct houses for widows and dependents of soldiers who died in the Kargil war.
Several members of the former Chief Minister Ashok Chavan were beneficiary of flats in the society.
The issue rocked both houses of the Indian Parliament. Flats worth Rs. 8 crore were sold out at Rs. 800,000.
Meanwhile, the controversial housing society is all set to be demolished by December end, according to sources, who said that there was no other option but to demolish the building which was constructed without the permission of the federal ministry of environment and forests.
The federal environment and forest ministry had issued a show cause notice to the housing society to respond by Dec. 10, with the possibility of the society being given a further grace period till Dec. 15.
However, the ministry is of the firm opinion that the society may not be given any protection under any rule or law.
In a recent judgment the Supreme Court had said that since not a single floor of the Adarsh building has been constructed legally, the government was free and can take decision to demolish the entire 32-story building.
Therefore, the doors for the society to approach the judiciary are also now closed.
According to sources, it is now a fortnight since the environment ministry had issued the notice to the housing society. The notice reached the society two days late, but still the society had not responded. The federal government is of the view that entire foundation of the society is erected on base of illegal construction and corruption and it would be wrong to extend any kind of protection to the building.
