“Any attempt to tamper with the billing system could
be detected by sophisticated devices. Those employed to read meters are
also closely monitored,” said Abdul Salam Al-Yemani, deputy chairman of
media affairs at the SEC, adding that tampering with electricity meters
is totally unacceptable. Eight company officials were, according to
media reports, recently sacked for registering false consumer numbers
and putting some customers’ bills on other people’s accounts, resulting
in huge bills running into thousands of Saudi riyals.Al-Yemani said
customers can complain if they see any irregularities in bills and that
necessary action will be taken on the matter. He added that the
company achieved excellent international performance ratings last year
with less than 1 percent errors in its services. The company is also
undertaking studies in conjunction with research firms to improve its
services. It is also considering introducing a prepaid card scheme
instead of the current meter system.
