“I have told my Palestinian friends that the eventual target will be the establishment of a modern, unified and sovereign state with East Jerusalem as its capital,” Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said in remarks before starting talks with King Abdallah.
Medvedev visited the West Bank town of Jericho on Tuesday where he held talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and called on Israel to stop settlers from building illegal settlements in Palestinian territories.
“Russia, as one of the sponsors of the Middle East process, will remain committed to the achievement of durable peace and is aware of its special responsibility in this respect,” Medvedev said.
He alluded to Russia’s membership of the Middle East quartet, which also comprises the United States, European Union and the United Nations.
Abduallah expressed appreciation for Moscow’s “important and pivotal role as well as its support for efforts aimed at achieving the two-state solution.”
“Jordan will continue to work with Russia with a view to ensuring a resumption of the Palestinian-Israeli talks,” he said.
The two leaders also discussed means of boosting bilateral cooperation, particularly in the nuclear and energy spheres, a royal court statement said.
The ministers of energy in the two countries earlier Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding for cooperation in the field of energy that provided for Russian firms to explore for oil in Jordan, according to an official statement.
