A UNAMID statement late Sunday says the mission was informed about the action almost three hours after government forces cordoned off the Zamzam camp that houses tens of thousands displaced by the region’s fighting. The camp is located near El Fasher, the North Darfur capital.
UNAMID says it was told the army and police sought to “arrest criminal elements, seize weapons and confiscate illegal substances” inside the camp.
The international mission subsequently boosted its presence in Zamzam, called on authorities to act with restraint and said it would seek information about those arrested.
