“All elementary, intermediate and secondary boys’ and girls’ schools in Jeddah are ready to receive students on Saturday after being rehabilitated and cleaned up following the recent rains and floods in the city,” the Department of Education said in a statement on Friday.
The statement also said Ministry of Education Undersecretary for School Affairs Saad Al-Fihaid, accompanied by director of boys’ education Abdullah ibn Ahmad Al-Thaqafi, who is also the chairman of the emergency committee, and director of girls’ education Ahmad ibn Ali Al-Zahrani made field visits to schools and were assured that they were ready to receive students.
The statement said the emergency committee has given students the option to sit the mid-year exams with their other colleagues on Sunday or take the exams on March 5.
“If a male or female student is unable to go back home, he or she can refer to the nearest accommodation center to take the exam,” the statement added.
The emergency committee told Arab News that more than 1,600 students lost their textbooks in the flooding.
Chairman of the committee of volunteers, Anas Badawood, said 963 male and 609 female students have lost their textbooks. A total of 1,572 male and female students whose homes were damaged by the rains were placed in accommodation centers.
