The incident happened near the disputed Spratly Islands which are claimed by the Philippines, China and other nations.
Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario said Friday that officials are in dialogue “with our Chinese friends” over the incident at the Reed Bank that he says is part of Philippine territory. Chinese Embassy spokesman Ethan Sun declined to immediately comment.
Lt. Gen. Juancho Sabban said two warplanes were deployed Wednesday after the Filipino ship complained. The Chinese vessels later left without confrontation.
