Eurozone leaders hammered out a deal early Saturday that involves a German-backed competitiveness pact but also boosting the powers of the region’s bailout fund — a concession by Berlin.
Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said Sunday that the agreement is good for Germany because it will stabilize the euro, but “we Germans will also keep our hands on our own budget.”
However, a lawmaker for the minister’s Free Democrats, Frank Schaeffler, was quoted as criticizing the package.
He told the Bild daily: “We wanted neither a qualitative nor a quantitative expansion of the rescue fund.”
