“One of the culprits worked for the customs department at the sea port, and used his position to traffic car parts stolen from his department to his two accomplices to sell in the market,” said spokesman for Jeddah police Col. Misfer Al-Juaid.
Meanwhile, a 36-year-old Saudi man is in custody after being arrested in downtown Jeddah for impersonating an immigration officer to scam a Saudi and a Yemeni by promising to expedite their papers with the Passport Department, according to Al-Juaid.
The suspect, who was not identified, was arrested at a downtown hotel where he had registered under a different name using a stolen family ID card.
"Police investigators found and confiscated several expired passports in his room belonging to people of different nationalities," said the spokesman.
Also, police recovered SR500,000 from a 38-year-old Thai resident suspected of scamming the amount from a 62-year-old Saudi woman and a 54-year-old Saudi man in Jeddah.
“The suspect promised his victims that he would start a poultry import-export business from Malaysia. After receiving the money he denied any knowledge of the business and denied receiving money,” said Al-Juaid. “However, during questioning after his arrest in Al-Baghdadiya, he admitted to police that he took SR300,000 from the woman and SR200,000 from the man.”
