Last week, President Benigno Aquino III asked Filipinos living within 62 miles (100 kilometers) of the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant to return home after Japan raised the severity of the crisis to equal the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. The plant has been leaking radiation since it was devastated by a March 11 earthquake and tsunami.
Officials say Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario welcomed the 44 Filipinos home Sunday at Manila’s airport.
The government is paying for their repatriation but is unsure if all Filipinos will leave the battered region.
