The call was made at a seminar on university education in the IT age at Taibah University, which concluded on Wednesday.
The seminar also highlighted the need to involve Arab universities and research centers in the establishment of digital warehouses on the Internet as a prelude to the creation of an Arab database that would contribute to the advancement of scientific research and university teaching.
The three-day symposium called for the establishment of a digital library in each Arab university, providing a medium to access the intellectual and literary works of staff and students.
It urged the establishment of a digital publishing medium that would allow free and open publishing and therefore boost the academic output of staff from all Arab universities. The seminar called for further boosting cooperation with Arab universities and asked for turning the syllabuses into various digital forms in line with current IT development.
A total of 29 research works selected from 150 were presented during the seminar, which was attended by delegates from Egypt, Morocco, Jordan and Algeria in addition to representatives from a number of Saudi universities.
The seminar also called for establishing an electronic Arab university on the Internet to teach various subjects.
During the seminar, the Communications and Information Technology Commission presented its national IT plan which consisted of 26 targets and 98 projects aimed at setting up mobile IT centers in universities and other institutions, the creation of a national center for electronic education, the introduction of computers and Internet in university syllabuses and the spreading of IT and communications systems in educational institutions.
