According to police, the three workers from the same country have been working as truck drivers for a transport company in Jeddah. The estimated value of each container is SR1 million.
On the day of the incident, the management of the transport company had requested the three Asian drivers to load the shipment from the Jeddah seaport in their respective trucks and deliver them to the consignee, whose warehouse is located in a suburb of the port city of Jeddah.
The authorities at the seaport confirmed that the consignment had been cleared from customs and left the seaport on June 8.
The consignee, a reputable dealer in household electronics, had complained to the police as well as to the transport company that the goods had not reached his warehouse.
Two days ago, police found two of the three trucks abandoned in Al-Hamra district of Jeddah.
Sources from the transport company told Arab News Sunday that the three drivers had been working under the direct sponsorship of the company, which is responsible for the delivery of the goods to the consignee who imported the shipment from a foreign country.
The sources said the transport company had reported the matter to the drivers’ respective foreign missions.
Arab News learned that on the instruction of the foreign mission, police back home are currently conducting investigations about the matter with the suspects’ families.
A diplomat from an Asian embassy told Arab News that the Saudi security network is so strong that such criminals cannot escape from its scrutiny.
“It is really difficult for such criminals to pass through Saudi immigration since fingerprints are recorded in the machines and the passport can also reveal the identity and other details.”
