Abu Simbel Festival, Egypt. Abu Simbel Festival lets the environs of the old temple fill with crowd during the dawn, where they observe the shafts of light enlightening Ramses, Ra and Amun. This sensational sight occurs twice a year, in February (on his date of his ascension to the throne) and October (on his birthday). The history of the festival throws some light on the then King Ramses II who wanted his temple to be angled at Abu Simbel owing to his architectural egotism and fit of precision. As a result, inner sanctum would illuminate only twice a year — once on the anniversary of his rise to the throne, and once on his birthday. Astoundingly, it is the only sacred place that lights up rest the figurine of Ptah still continues to remain in sheer darkness.
