Shukhrat Kudratov and Abdurakhmon Sharipov, who are representing Asia-Plus newspaper, said an anti-organized crime officer repeatedly told them Wednesday that he was “willing to put a bullet in their forehead.”
The lawyers identified the officer as Alikhon Mulloyev and said he is acting as a witness for a colleague in a libel case against the newspaper.
Independent media has come under sustained pressure from the authorities in this authoritarian Central Asian nation in recent years.
President Emomali Rakhmon, in office since 1992, runs Tajikistan with a heavy hand and the government is frequently criticized for human rights violations.
