Jasper Ombati said Wednesday that two women and 15 men had died since Sunday in different bars in Nyahururu town in central Kenya after ingesting the traditional drink. He says the cause of the contamination is unclear and the government is conducting tests.
Ombati says nine people have been arrested in connection with the mass poisoning and would appear in court on Monday.
Deaths from drinking contaminated traditionally brewed alcohol are common in Africa.
