5,323 candidates in poll fray

The final list of candidates for the Sept. 29 poll was announced on Saturday. Riyadh province has the most candidates, 907, followed by Asir with 671.
Jazan ranks in third position with 458 candidates, said a government statement on Saturday. Al-Ahsa region, out of the 16 regions of the Kingdom divided by the election commission, is at the bottom of the list with 89 candidates, said the statement.
It added that voters could contact election officials if their names do not figure in the electoral register. "Eligible citizens can register themselves by logging on to the commission website (www.intekhab.gov.sa)," said an election official. He pointed out that any Saudi citizen can send a short message with his ID number to 0560303050 to obtain his voter registration details.
More than 1.2 million Saudi citizens are likely to figure in the final voter lists prepared by the election panels across the Kingdom.
According to the election commission, the campaigning period for candidates will officially end at 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 28.
Asked about the number of candidates in other regions, the official said there are 144 candidates in Makkah, 360 in Madinah and 344 in Jeddah.
In the Eastern Province, there are 321 candidates, in Qassim 460, Hail 350, Baha 259, Tabuk 248, Najran 161, Al-Jouf 213, Northern Border Province 122 and Taif 216.
All essential steps have been taken to ensure trouble-free and transparent polling at the 752 voting centers.
There are 816 seats on 285 municipal councils to be filled, said the election official.
He said the code of conduct with regard to electioneering would come into effect on Sunday, when candidates kick off their campaigns. The candidates will be allowed to do canvassing, advertise their candidature, hold meetings and unveil their manifesto of plans and policies.
The election results will be announced on Oct. 1.
