The men were returned to Uruguay from Haiti on Friday and by Monday morning were in preventive detention on military charges of disobeying orders and dereliction of duty.
Military tribunal secretary Marta Iturvide tells the Associated Press that the decision can’t be appealed, so they’ll stay in jail until the military decides whether to dishonorably discharge the men. Then civilian courts would take over.
President Jose Mujica says the men would face the most severe penalties if convicted.
A cell phone video of the alleged abuse prompted rock-throwing protests in Port-au-Prince.
