Hilary was still a Category 4 storm late Saturday morning, with maximum sustained winds near 140 mph (225 kph).
The hurricane is not forecast to make landfall, but the US National Hurricane Center says Mexico’s coast has been affected by wind, rain and heavy surf from Hilary.
Meanwhile, a new tropical depression had formed in the Atlantic, far from land off the coast of Africa. It does not threaten land.
Tropical Storm Ophelia also was swirling in the Atlantic, though it appeared to be taking a turn to the northwest away from the US mainland.
