Sunday’s event over a 1.8 kilometer (1.1 mile) course linking Lei Yue Mun in Kowloon to Quarry Bar on Hong Kong island was the first time the race had been held since 1978.
It had been a Hong Kong tradition since 1906, when the China-controlled territory was a British colony. This year’s event was held several kilometers (miles) east of the traditional Victoria Harbor venue.
Hong Kong paralegal Davis Hui said “there was no visible rubbish in the water” and that “it was a good idea” to revive the race now that the water is cleaner.
