The inquiry, led by judge Brian Leveson, will hear from a group of about 50 people who allege media intrusion into their private lives.
Among those taking part are Harry Potter author JK Rowling and actor Hugh Grant, as well as Formula One boss Max Mosley and the parents of missing girl Madeleine McCann.
Prime Minister David Cameron launched the inquiry in response to the phone hacking scandal in which journalists at News International are accused of hacking into the voice mail messages of crime victims and celebrities.
Leveson will examine the ethics and practices of British journalists and investigate improper conduct.
