Police inspector general Charles Bisengimana said Wednesday that provincial assembly representative Marius Gangale was killed Tuesday night in Kinshasa. Gangale’s wife says she was in the car with her husband when two attackers shot him and demanded her belongings.
Gangale was a leader in a major opposition party. He was not running in the Nov. 28 election for the presidency and legislature.
Human rights groups are expressing fears about an atmosphere of spiraling violence and hate speech ahead of the vote in the vast mineral-rich nation. The outcome of the vote is almost certain to keep President Joseph Kabila in power.
