In Champaign, Illinois, Brandon Paul shook off a poor-shooting game to score 18 points, including two free throws with 45 seconds left that gave Illinois the lead.
Paul had two chances to extend the lead for the Illini (16-6, 5-4 Big Ten) but he missed the front end of 1-and-1s with 26 seconds and 11 seconds to play.
Michigan State’s Derrick Nix had a chance to tie the game at 42 with 14 seconds left but he made one of two free throws. Keith Appling missed a driving shot with 2 seconds left, the final chance for the Spartans (17-5, 6-3).
Paul scored 13 of Illinois’ 20 second-half points, but was 6 of 17 from the field. He was 5 of 9 from the free throw line and the Illini finished 9 of 17.
In Milwaukee, Jae Crowder had 20 points and 12 rebounds to help Marquette rally from a sluggish first half.
Vander Blue scored 16 points and Darius Johnson-Odom added 14 for the Golden Eagles (19-4, 8-2 Big East), who extended their winning streak to seven games.
Trailing at halftime, Marquette turned to Blue and Johnson-Odom in a 16-2 run to take the lead midway through the second half.
Herb Pope scored 16 points for the Pirates (15-7, 4-6), who have lost five straight.
Former Marquette standout Dwyane Wade attended the game, along with Miami Heat teammate LeBron James. Miami is in town to play the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday.
In Charlottesville, Virginia, Mike Scott scored 23 points, including four free throws over the final 16.8 seconds, and had 10 rebounds for Virginia.
Joe Harris added 19 points for Virginia (18-3, 5-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), which used a 19-3 second-half run to take command. The Cavaliers reached 18 victories before the end of January for the first time since 1981-82.
Devin Booker scored 16 points and Tanner Smith had 14 for the Tigers (11-10, 3-4), who were without starting forward Milton Jennings after he was suspended for academic reasons on Monday.
In State College, Pennsylvania, Jordan Taylor scored 18 points, including a 3-pointer from the top of key with 1:44 left, to help Wisconsin to its sixth straight victory.
Taylor made six free throws over the final minute, for the Badgers (18-5, 7-3 Big Ten), who overcame an early nine-point deficit.
Trailing 40-38, Penn State (10-13, 2-8) missed on three tries to tie or take the lead. Jon Graham missed two foul shots before Jermaine Marshall misfired on a 3 and missed a layup after grabbing his own rebound.
Taylor took over from there with his clutch 3. He scored 13 of Wisconsin’s last 17 points.
In Fayeetteville, Arkansas, Ricky Scott scored 18 points and Arkansas equaled its Southeastern Conference-best with nine 3-pointers.
Five players scored in double figures for the Razorbacks (16-6, 4-3), who improved to 16-0 in Bud Walton Arena this season. Julysses Nobles added 17 points for Arkansas.
The Commodores (16-6, 5-2) led 40-37 in the second half before Arkansas’ Hunter Mickelson tied the game with a 3-pointer. That started a stretch where the Razorbacks hit six of seven field goals from behind the arc and took a 59-46 lead.
Vanderbilt, which was led by John Jenkins’ 19 points, was unable to get closer than seven points after that.
