DIY hair care recipes: Make your own conditioner

There are a number of homemade hair conditioners, especially for those who are looking to benefit fully from what nature has to offer. What’s in your kitchen is powerful enough to make your hair shiny, beautiful, scented and silky smooth. Saving some money wouldn’t hurt as well.

Pure and simple food items are just what your hair needs for a healthy boost that you can see and feel. Foodstuff that is found in your pantry and fridge can help you to create amazing ‘Do it yourself’ hair conditioners.

“No matter how many chemical conditioners and hair masks we try, our hair never reach the point where the hair is super shiny and smooth. Instead of loading on the harmful chemicals, try to make your own handmade mixtures,” said Sarah Mustafa, hair therapist at Red Roses salon. “Hair care is an extensive overall process that involves proper hygiene, cleaning, moisturizing and treating, and conditioning is only a part of it so make sure to never pass this step,” she added.

Below are some of the tried and tested hair conditioner recipes from the hair specialist:

Avocado:
Avocados are rich in healthy fats, which means that it will make the hair super shiny, very manageable and totally light and airy.

What you need:
One piece of avocado
Two tablespoons of olive oil
Two tablespoons of water
Two tablespoons of heavy cream

How to do it:
Mix the ingredients together, apply to the hair and comb it through the hair and cover it with a shower cap. Leave it on the hair for at least 20 minutes to help let the mixture soak in.
Rinse the conditioner out with warm water. Wash the hair with shampoo and rinse with cold
water.

Shea butter:
This magic butter is one of the few products that is able to make your damaged ends fade and make your hair feel thick and look beautiful.

What you need:
One and 1/3 cups of shea butter
Half cup olive oil
One teaspoon of vitamin E oil
Half an ounce of fragrance oil (Such as lavender oil, rose oil or rosemary oil)

How to do it:
Slow heat shea butter in a saucepan on a low heat and make sure not to burn it. Heat it until it has turned into liquid form, then add the olive oil. Allow mixture to cool for 30 to 40 minutes. Do not allow it to set completely. Then add in the vitamin E and the fragrance oil. Whip the mixture until it reaches a light mousse like consistency. Spoon mixture and apply to the hair.

Coconut oil:
Coconut oil is one of the few oils that can make your hair not only smell awesome, but also that will make it look shiny very soft. This coconut oil conditioner is designed specifically for those with oily hair. It will help get rid of the unwanted and excess oil and leave the hair feeling light and natural.

What you need:
One-cup of water
One egg yolk
One teaspoon of coconut oil

How to do it:
Start by whisking the egg yolk until it becomes frothy, then add the coconut oil and whisk it even more. Add water and then stir it until it becomes smooth. Apply the mix to the hair and massage it into the scalp. Let it rest for 2-5 minutes.
Rinse your hair with clean cool water. Voila! The bonus is great smelling tropical coconut loveliness in your hair.

Mayonnaise, egg whites and yogurt:

This homemade hair conditioner is going to make your hair look and feel beautiful. You can substitute plain yogurt with vanilla to make it smell better and also make sure that you rinse this hair conditioner out in warm water, not hot because you are using raw eggs.

What you need:
Half a cup of plain yogurt
Half a cup of mayonnaise
Egg whites from one egg

How to do it:
Whip all the ingredients to create this deep conditioning magic in a bowl. Lather it onto your wet hair, focusing on the ends where you’ll likely have the most damage and make sure to really coat all the parts of hair.
Cover it with a shower cap or wrap it in a plastic wrap and wait for the conditioner to work its magic for at least 30 minutes.
This mixture will drip, and you will hate the smell. It is recommended to tuck a tissue or cotton balls around the edges of the shower cap or to wrap your head in a wet towel to avoid it from dripping all over the place. Rinse your hair with warm water and then shampoo your hair.

Honey hair conditioner:
This one smells so much better than the mayo, egg whites and yogurt hair mask and it is as effective. Remember that some of the ingredients and how much you use them might affect your hair, especially if you have naturally oily hair.

What you need:
Half a cup of organic honey
Four tablespoons of light olive oil (Use less amount for oily hair)

How to do it:
Mix the ingredients together in a small bowl and pour mixture through a funnel into a plastic bottle with a squeeze top lid.
Gently shake the mixture and massage into the hair until evenly covered. Cover the head with a shower cap and allow the conditioner to soak in for at least 30 minutes and up to an hour. Shampoo and rinse the hair with warm water.
