India’s top Urdu poet Nida Fazli, who expired on Monday, was revered both in India and Pakistan due to his immaculate poetry diction. As a matter of fact, Nida inherited poetry from his family. His father was a great Urdu poet and his brother Umeed Fazli also earned great reputation in Urdu poetry.

Nida was considered one of the top most poets in India who invented new trends in the Urdu language. He wrote fabulous ghazals and poems in Urdu and “dohe” in Hindi, due to which he was popular in both Urdu and Hindi circles. Nida’s Urdu poetry had the privilege to be included in school and college syllabi. He was also popular in the film world for penning beautiful songs for movies like Raziya Sultan, Aap to Aise Na Thay, Vijay, Sarfarosh, Silsila and Sir.

Nida wrote 24 fabulous poetry and prose books like Mulaqatein, Lafzon Ka Pul, More Nach, Aankh Aur Khawb Ke Darmiyan and Khoya Huwa Sa Kucch. He also received Padma Shree Award from the government of India for his immense contribution to the field of literature.

Besides common people, imminent personalities from the Hindi film world, literary world and political field gathered at his residence in Andheri, Mumbai, besides many condolence messages by Indian political leaders. Nida is no more, but his legacy will live on. — Anees Lokhande, Jubail
