MAKKAH: More than 33.6 million Umrah pilgrims were transported in 2 million vehicles to and from the Grand Mosque, an increase of 26 percent over last year.
In a press statement, the Makkah governorate said there was also an increase in passenger numbers during Ramadan over last year. The number of vehicles that transported Umrah pilgrims last year reached 1.7 million, transporting around 26 million passengers.
The statement added that the transportation plan, which was approved and followed up by Makkah Gov. and Chairman of the Central Haj Committee Prince Khalid Al-Faisal, bore fruit thanks to the joint efforts of all participating government sectors.
The directorate showed that more than 8 million passengers had been transported from Ajyad Al-Masafi by 945,000 vehicles. More than 4 million Umrah pilgrims and visitors were transported from Bab Ali Yard by 671,000 vehicles; the number of passengers through King Abdul-Aziz Gate reached 2 million, transported by 500,000 vehicles. Groul station transported more than 1 million visitors and Umrah pilgrims in 206,000 vehicles. Ajyad station transported more than 522,000 passengers; Jabal Al-Kaaba transported more than 40,000; Shaab Amer transported more than 13 million passengers; and Ree’ Bakhash transported more than 1 million passengers.
