RIYADH: The Kingdom’s relentless march for global humanitarian aid program, mainly for the Yemenis, has catapulted the nation to the list of top countries with welfare schemes.
A detailed report, entitled “Humanitarian and health services provided by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for the wounded Yemenis, their families and compatriots within and outside the Kingdom,” has taken note of the the Kingdom’s humanitarian aid programs, which is being undertaken under the auspices of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman.
Released by the King Salman Center for Relief and Humanitarian Aid (KSCRHA), the report said that the aid programs with the aim of caring and sharing, has put the Kingdom in the list of those select countries that are engaged in providing assistance and relief in the world in times of tsunami devastations and other natural disasters.
Saudi Arabia has also provided aid and soft loans for the implementation of programs and projects of economic and social development in several countries.
The Saudi program to separate twins, it noted, has restored hope in the life of rare and incurable cases. So fat, at least 40 successful operations have been conducted.
The separation of Siamese twins from Yemen has catapulted the Kingdom to the ranks of the first few countries. The Federation of Red Crescent and Red Cross confirmed that the Kingdom is the world’s largest contributor to the field of humanitarian relief works and it deserves the title of “Kingdom of humanity” through its humanitarian initiatives, the size of donations and assistance provided for the peoples affected either by war or natural disasters.
Spurred on by the Kingdom’s belief in the importance of humanitarian works, King Salman issued directives for the establishment of KSCRHA, stressing the Kingdom’s leading role in the service of global humanity.
The health system in Yemen, according to the report, is on the brink of collapse and seems difficult to be restored in near future, unless urgent necessary medical assistance is provided to alleviate the sufferings of the people of Yemen.
The Kingdom has been in the forefront of restoring Yemen’s health system to save it from total collapse by providing health, medical, therapeutic, psychological and social services for the wounded Yemenis, their families and compatriots at home and abroad.
It is also providing emergency medical services to save their lives, preventing the spread of epidemics and infectious diseases, assisting in the continued operation of Yemeni health facilities through the support of medicines, medical equipment and prosthetic devices and rehabilitating the sick and the wounded medically, psychologically and socially.
Understanding its responsibility in the international community, Saudi Arabia has been playing a leading role in providing assistance to Yemen for decades in political, economic, social and health fields.
When Yemen faced the recent crisis, the Kingdom became the first country to respond to the UN’s call for urgent relief. King Salman took no time in making available $274 million through KSCRHA for food, medicine, accommodation, care for children and women, rehabilitation of health facilities to include all governorates of Yemen, provision of humanitarian assistance to refugees, the displaced and the stranded outside Yemen. The signing of agreements with the UN humanitarian organizations and international organizations was part of the objective to alleviate the sufferings of the Yemeni people and provide the best humanitarian services to them.
The KSCRHA has undertaken these responsibilities of funding and supporting efforts to provide a continuation of health services in Yemen and rehabilitation of the sick, the injured and the wounded. It does it by supporting Yemeni government agencies in coordination with specialized agencies in the field of health and international organizations.
The Kingdom has implemented more than 20 medical programs to help the Yemeni people benefitting more than 15,982,060 Yemenis. This included the provision of more than 823 tons of medicines and medical supplies, and equipping a number of hospitals and health centers in collaboration with more than 12 international and regional organizations at a cost of approximately $89,673,236.
KSCRHA with the help of Arab coalition operation broke the siege of Taiz by dropping 40 tons of medical and relief assistance on Jan. 13, 2016 at different locations in the province and continued its operations after that until the total dropped amount reached 140 tons of medical and relief materials.
The Kingdom responded to the call of the UN for the relief of people as a model for the partnership and international cooperation between the Kingdom and the international and regional organizations in providing humanitarian and medical assistance.
According to the report issued by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in June 2015, the total health and medical needs in Yemen in 2015 was $151,839,469 to carry out the necessary activities for the beneficiaries of the Yemeni people.
