I read with interest the report “Islam channel in German to remove misconceptions” (July 31). In the current global situation, it is very important to take such measures to counter the negative propaganda against Islam and Muslims. It is a great move and all Muslim countries should take similar initiatives to cater to the needs of the western viewership. In addition to launching such media outlets, it is also important to promote these steps so as to attract viewers to these channels.
We are passing through a difficult phase. Radical elements are misusing the name of Islam for their nefarious designs and the mainstream western media is unable to differentiate between Muslims and these unscrupulous elements. We need to change the media discourse on Islam and Muslims.
It is of extreme importance to educate people about Islam. It is not necessary to make efforts to preach about Islam at this point in time. We should be focused, as the report has mentioned, on clearing misconceptions about Islam and Muslims. Daesh and its likes are not the representatives of Islam and Muslims. These organizations have wreaked havoc on the Muslims. We are also the victims of terrorism.
