Rights body probes mother’s criminal behavior

MADINAH: The Ministry of Labor and Social Development has asked the local authorities in Madinah to discuss legal and criminal aspects of one of the worst forms of family violence registered in the Kingdom.
This rare incident that dominated media headlines involved a 40-year-old mother, who treated her own children mercilessly and subjected them to inhuman treatment in Khyber. The children’s father had lost his legs to diabetes and was unable to protect them.
The Human Rights Commission’s city office also investigated into the case in which the mother abused the three offsprings — two girls and a boy — psychologically and physically by imprisoning them in a room on the roof of the house, starving them for long periods and beating them severely over two years.
It is not clear yet what pushed the mother to treat her children this way, but sources indicate that she suffered from mental illness.
The Comprehensive Rehabilitation Center in Madinah hosted the three abused offspring after they were transferred from Khybar.
The supervising doctor said that the child’s situation has improved by 70 percent, but he needs some time to recover from the malnourishment and exhaustion to which he was subjected.
Describing what he was subjected to, while not begrudging his mother, the boy said: “I want to stay here in the center. I do not want to go back home.”
He refused to talk about his mother.
