JEDDAH: The increase in crime rates in a number of districts in the provinces of Taif and Jeddah forced the Interior Ministry to reinforce the surveillance system with fixed cameras.
An official source in the Interior Ministry revealed that a total of 18,000 cameras are covering Makkah regions and the Grand Mosque, including security sectors and other service providing agencies.
The source pointed out that the monitoring in these neighborhoods will support the presence of field elements, where entrances and exits will be monitored, as well as follow-up vehicles or suspicious persons in these neighborhoods, and passing reports of movements more accurately to field elements of the security and police patrols.
Interior Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Mansour Al-Turki confirmed a decline in the crime rate in the Kingdom last year by 10.01%.
The highest crime rate was recorded in Riyadh with 27.4 percent, followed by Makkah with 12.2 percent and Jeddah 12.1 percent. Yanbu recorded the highest number of 54 crimes, followed by Madinah with 28.38 crimes, then the Holy City with 28 crimes, then Taif with 27 crimes.
