This is with reference to the report “Duterte rejects UN criticism over killings” (Aug. 20). I believe that whatever Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte is doing is correct. His stance toward the United Nations and other so-called rights groups is justified. These international organizations are only interested in issuing statements of condemnation and damning reports about various countries. They don’t have the capability to clean up the mess created by drug cartels and corrupt leaders or officials but they love to criticize those who want to work for the betterment of their country or their region.
The United Nations should have taken some voluntary measures against the social and economic ills of Philippines earlier. Duterte does get carried away sometimes but he does not have any other choice. These criminals know well how to exploit legal loopholes. When situation goes out of control, it is better to take such drastic measures, which might appear extrajudicial but such steps are necessary to eliminate the evil.
Instead of criticizing, the United Nations should offer help to Duterte to carry out his responsibilities more effectively and in a better way. But the UN would not do that. It is more interested in criticisms and issuing reports, which mean nothing in the real world. — Wajihuddin Minhas, Dammam
