Leaving the UN

This is with reference to the report “Duterte threatens to pull Philippines out of UN” (Aug. 22). I think that Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte should take steps to materialize his threat. As a matter of fact, all developing countries should follow suit or at least consider this option seriously. What is the use of the United Nations for developing countries and the Muslim world?
The UN never acts in time to resolve any conflict. It waits for the green signal from the powerful nations to take action. We have already seen its helplessness in the face of aggression from a powerful country. The United States rejected all UN resolutions and took a unilateral action by attacking Iraq. We saw the destruction of a poor country hit by decades of biting economic sanctions at the hands of the powerful nations. The UN could do nothing to prevent the invasion. The UN should be left with the permanent members of the Security Council and the rest of countries should form a separate body to resolve their matters in a transparent manner. The very existence of the Security Council raises serious questions over the transparency of the UN. — Majid Kareem, Riyadh
