RIYADH: The police recently arrested 12 members of a gang which robbed bank customers in various parts of the capital.
Riyadh police spokesman Col. Fawaz Al-Maiman said the gang members robbed people who left banks after following them. He said the robbers drove around the city in rented cars and once they saw an opportunity to carry out their intent, they struck in broad daylight.
“Based on initial investigation, the police found that the suspects had robbed 15 people after threatening them with knives and cleavers,” Al-Maiman said. He said the suspects used rented cars to avoid being traced and identified. Nine Ethiopians, two Egyptians and one Sudanese made up the gang. They are in their early twenties.
Al-Maiman asked all residents of the city to be extra careful when they leave a bank. Aside from apprehending the robber gang, Riyadh police made several arrests for offenses such as murder, arson and brewing and selling liquor. One case involved an Asian expat who was brewing alcohol in his second-floor apartment in the Suleimania district. “He was caught in the act,” he said.
