RIYADH: Experts at the Directorate of Motor Vehicle Periodical Inspection (MVPI) say there are more than 70 technical deficiencies that could lead to serious car accidents and deaths.
Technicians at the inspection stations spread throughout the Kingdom have discovered many deficiencies or non-authorized changes to vehicles which are major causes to accidents, a statement issued by the MVPI said.
The MVPI explained that only 10 percent of the vehicles undergo technical inspection at stations spread throughout 26 cities and provinces out of the total vehicles found in the Kingdom, despite the high operational capability of these stations.
The inspection of vehicles passes through several stages, in accordance with the specifications of Saudi Arabia and Gulf countries, and many of these stages are automatically run without the interference of a human element, it said.
The car inspection system in the Kingdom is among the best in the world, the statement said.
The majority of the technical malfunctions discovered in the tested vehicles are centered on parts located at the bottom of the vehicle, which normally do not capture the attention of drivers, the statement said.
These parts normally do not cause concern from drivers as long as vehicles are running properly, and they ignore the deteriorating technical situation of their cars, the statement said.
