It is heartening to read about the discovery of “14 new caves in Al-Ahsa’s Al-Qara Mountain” (Aug. 31). Saudi Arabia is home to various heritage sites. It is necessary to develop those sites to attract domestic and foreign tourists. In the initial phase, the authorities should take steps for the promotion of domestic tourism. Once a proper infrastructure is developed, efforts should be shifted to attract foreign tourism. When it comes to tourism, Saudi Arabia has huge potential. This is in addition to religious tourism.
There is a great need to promote such historical sites within the Kingdom. With the development of these heritage sites, many other businesses will also grow in the nearby areas like hotels, restaurants, supermarkets and gas stations. In the long run, we cannot rule out the possibility of establishment of new towns and small cities around such sites.
In other words, the possibilities are limitless. We just need to devise a comprehensive strategy to achieve this goal. It could prove to be a major income booster for the Kingdom. — Pervez Mushahid, Hail
