This refers to the article “Obama’s real mistake” (Aug. 31) by Christopher R. Hill. The Obama administration did make a serious mistake by not solving Syria’s crisis in the earlier stage. Russia’s involvement in Syria has made the situation worse, as it was backed by Iran and Hezbollah to keep Bashar Assad in power.
Assad, who is responsible for the deaths of more than 400,00 Syrians and displacement of more than a million, has no right to stay in power. Russia, being the superpower, is not acting in a sensible way and supporting the wrong man.
The situation in Syria is very sad because innocent people, including women and children, are suffering and dying. There is no food or shelter for them. Their houses are being bombed. Children are being deprived of their right to education. Surprisingly, all this death and destruction is not moving the UN. What is the UN for when it cannot protect innocent and oppressed people?
The US, which boasts of its superpower status, is also not doing much for the Syrians. Barack Obama will surely go down in history as the weakest and most timid American president. It is under the Obama administration that sanctions against Iran were lifted. This, despite the fact that Tehran is sowing the seeds of sectarianism and chaos in Yemen, Iraq and Syria through their proxies like Houthis and Hezbollah.
